COELACANTH; A prehistoric fish once thought to be extinct found living in modern times. The Coelacanth Rescue Mission strives to preserve these remarkable fish from the danger of extinction they now face.

You probably know that amphibians evolved from fish, right? This means that at some point thorough history, about 400 million years ago a certain family of fish began developing "bony" fins that after a while became legs. So, the first amphibians reached land and some of those specimens have been found in the fossil beds of northern Canada and Greenland. However, the family of the coleacanths, sarcopterygian fish that developed legs, predating dinosaurs by almost 150 million years was believed to have disappeared during the K-T event that wiped out many forms of life about 66 million years ago.

However, back in the 1930s researchers found in the Comoros a living species of coleacanth, called nowe Latimeria. This site provides very interesting information about this living fossil as well as the plight to save it from extinction today.
