In order to bet, wage and win consistently, even in things that depend largely on luck and odds, knowledge is fundamental, as some frog leap tournaments in the United States prove. Indeed, there are places in California where people organise competitions in which frogs have to leap the longest possible distance. Owners go there with their amphibian pets and in some way or another - without hurting them, of course - they have to convince the frogs to make three leaps. Distances are then averaged and the winner is determined easily.
In these tournaments almost everybody who has a frog can participate, and it is quite interesting to see from toddlers to biologists trying to talk, persuade and convince their frogs to jump. The idea is, of course, to make them jump as far as possible to win the competition, but also to establish absolute records; without a doubt, even in this strange activity some betting and wagering has take and still takes place, and some people win in rather odd ways.
Some years ago, a collector and breeder of amphibians from Seattle imported for himself a Hercules frog from the jungle in Cameroon. This species can reach about 1,2 metres long with their legs extended; it is a rare animal that lives deep in the rainforest of Africa, and it is indeed very difficult to catch because frogs tend to take a leap whenever you approach them, only that this time, leaps are giant.
He presented his competitor frog in California, and it took only three jumps for it to get away with the competition as well as the absolute record: the animal jumped well over six metres.
Many participants agreed that while the African participant met the rules of the tournament, those were not designed to consider something so outlandish, and that comparing a regular frog with these was like trying to establish a resemblance between a car and a school bus; but the winner did so legitimately and so far, the rules stand.
So, even if you bet on frog leaps, learning and knowing things will indeed help you win, as knowledge always means an advantage and put the odds in your favour
