The use of perfumes and all sorts of aromatic essences is nothing new: in the ancient world oil, scented wax and flower petals were commonly used by leaders and wealthy people. It was customary for servants and slaves to throw petals as kings, princes and priests passed walking, or just where they stand, and this custom goes back to the time of the Assyrians, at least.

It was quite frequent that while these leaders went on discussing their administrative and daily uses, slaves kept scenting the room with petals, or burning woods and using palm leaves to freshen the atmosphere. It is even possible to see some carvings of scenes like the one we just described at place like the British Museum, in London.

One which is very good depicts a king having a meal with his wife as their servants kept amusing them in such ways. This was a custom intended not only to dilute bad odours, but was pure public relations.

In such a fashion, leaders appeared always as somewhat superior to their subjects who could hardly afford to pay such luxuries. In a way, it was like the red Hollywood carpet that we see today.

In ancient Egypt, women used scented wax as deodorant: they placed over their heads a little 'Phallus' made out of soft wax, which would melt during the whole day and disseminating the intended scent into the air surrounding them. Romans, of course, used to take baths at public houses, suing olive oil instead of soap, which was introduced later as a scented product: it was already known then, but made out of fat and ashes, it was reserved for slaves due to its awful smell.

Some of these customs were partially lost during millennia, only to be revived in Western countries after the renaissance.
