This is doubtlessly a commercial corporation seeking profits, but this publisher in particular has done a lot more than that and has acquired over many years of hard work a lot of cultural value as well: the reportages, investigative reports, photos obtained, some of which are considered historical per se; as well as many adventures in which their correspondents and journalists took part give Time - Life a special value: this company is as important - culturally speaking - as a major library. The fact that this is indeed a commercial venture but has so many positive undertones in the cultural sense only add to its value. Many times we have criticised from here, at Andinia, a lot of companies that seem dedicated to plundering our world's natural resources or seek profits without any regard for human beings, but this is a very different case. We are explorers and as such, feel fascinated with our world, and we think that companies such as this one not only have journalistic value, but motivational and inspirational as well: when someone reads about a correspondent visiting exotic places, or about ecological or social issues, and even about some scientific discovery such as in the realms of medicine or palaeontology, it is quite likely that the reader will be motivated to a sufficient degree as to take the initiative and do something about the topic in question. This could even lead to major changes in one or another facet of our society: brilliant careers have started like that, more than once. And as we have said or written in a lot of occasions, we are not against profitable activities; we just don't like to see people and Earth sacked; economic activity must be satisfactory to all in order to be really sustainable and companies thus should leave behind something else beyond their profit reports. This seems to be one of those still-exceptional cases in this department. |
