Since humans began using tools, we began using weapons. Slowly and over the stone age, the weapons created evolved from simple forms into the technologies and formats that essentially remained in use until the advent of firearms.
Those were the bow and the arrow, the spear and the shield.Development of metallurgy and its associated technologies provided men with better alloys to produce metallic weapons, but in essence, the same types of weaponry remained in use, with some few additions. The development of organises military forces contributed to the expansion of various empires; the Persian, for example, made good use of combat chariots, developed in what is now the Middle East at the time of the Assyrians.
The Romans developed discipline as a weapon itself; they had a very effective military machine that with the addition of military discipline was capable of resisting and obliterating even the most violent and dangerous situations, such as Boadicea's rebellion in Britannia. Then crossbows appeared, and then culverins and other primitive black powder guns, muskets, rifles, and then automatic weapons.
Guns, firearms, and all kinds of weapons are so inherent to human nature as writing or religion; it is not possible thus, neither it is reasonable, to pretend to eliminate weapons from society, because they are - like it or not - part of human culture. Of course, it is necessary to keep them out of reach of insane individuals, terrorists and criminals, but pretending to eliminate or ban them is in reality trying to go against thousands of years of evolution, and such undertakings are - as history proves in other cases - foolish and useless, not to say dangerous because such a thing would turn citizens into something as defenceless as sheep.
We don not believe in war, but neither we do believe in submission; humans are hunters, and that says it all. If the population of a country has arms at their disposal, the country will be better defended, criminals will know that they run into higher risks whenever trying to rob anyone, and even leaders with authoritarian designs will have to think twice before attempting anything arbitrary.
It is said persuasively that since in countries like the United States and Brazil there is a significant number of violent crimes, guns should be outlawed. But in countries like Canada and Switzerland people keep a vast arsenal at home and nothing happens; no bank robberies, no mass murders, and no violent crime.
So to say that having weapons is the cause of all evil is simply a lie. This proves that arguments in favour of disarming people are false, useless, and they are based either on ignorance, the desire to hide the incapacity of authorities to do their job, or even the existence of second agendas.
