Kitbuilding and self-designing aircraft, boats and cars have been growing as an inexpensive alternative to purchasing ready-made vehicles of different kinds. Insurance policies, labour costs and other issues contributed to elevate the costs of items that many seem as luxurious - the need not be so, depending on what you plan to use them for -, and so, manufacturers trying to increase their sales have began everywhere to sell partially-completed models to people willing to exchange money for work. Legally speaking in general, you will have to complete 51% of your kit so as to administratively consider it as home-built, experimental, etc. and depending on the overall design of the prouct, this may involve more or less hours, tooling and knowledge. However, despite what ads may say, building such things from scratch, and even from a kit, requires skill, determinantion, money and some degree of experitse working with tools and machinery. Nevertheless, building your own vehicle can be a very rewarding experience. You should never understimate the impact that such a project may have on you: in some cases, becoming a builder has changed the lives of people, even professionally. In most cases, if you purchase a kit you will also like to get in touch with other builders in your area, and this could lead to potentially very rewarding friendships. You can also involve your family into the project; this would be quite advisable since you will spend quite a few hours in your garage or shed, and kids and spouses may resent that a little. From our standpoint, not only you will save money and learn things, but you will also become more independent from our consumer-market society; our grandparents knew how to build their hoses, repair their cars, and so on. Now, we need an army of masons, repair technicians, consultants and representatives to achieve anything. Progress is good, but not at the expense of losing fundamental abilities for life and survival; these options offer you the best of both worlds, so take advantege of them and if you feel like becoming ashipyard master, by all means do so! |
