Because the objective of the game is to make a PROFIT.
The history of sports and competition is old, and the history of betting and wagering is almost as old as that of competition itself. In Vedic texts from India there is proof that as early as 1.500 B.C. there were chariot races among the Aryans living in the northern part of that subcontinent. These were chieftains, warriors, people of certain social stature as well as priest. These races started as religious in nature, and only to a selected few the use of the 'ratha' or two-wheeled light chariot was allowed. They were, indeed, one of the earliest forms of extreme sports that we kown about.
Indeed, racing was then - as it is now - very expensive: the 'rathakara' were the artisans who built those chariots, and together with the horse trainers or 'asvasani' were very well-paid experts whose work required a serious budget.
In order to become a landowner and proprietor of horses and chariots, that is, an 'biridashva,' you needed to have some real estate; you can't have horses if you don't have land for them. Then, you needed a small army of subjects to feed the horses and take care of the whole land. Plus, your chariots were prone to suffer 'rathabhresa' or road accidents, which were pretty expensive because chariots required a lot of care and very expensive and often imported materials, especially regarding the wood which was used to construct the wheels.
So, using a chariot was something like having a formula one team back then, and that had, like it does now, a certain attractive: people praised these competitors and whole industries arouse from the racing events of the Aryans. Maintenance of the chariots was of course one aspect of the whole thing, and then a whole set of high-quality cereal market arose, related to the particular feeding needs and requirements for the chariot horses; and of course, we have to count the political activities developed around these races as well as wagering and betting, which appeared shortly thereafter.
Then, like now, people wanted to make a profit.
