One concept that we recommend to everyone visiting our search engine whenever they are looking for gear is to consider purchasing these things in bulk and as standard-issue products, especially if they are destined for a whole group or expedition party. The second one is, indeed, to have standard equipment. Let's say that you form part of a group of five trekkers, each one having a pair of gloves. We have then five pairs.During a trip, one of the gloves is lost; now, you have four pairs and a half, and this last one becomes practically unusable. After a while, a second glove is lost or gets damaged; now, if each member of the group uses different models, you have two pairs of gloves less. However, if all gloves are of a standard model, you may be able to cannibalise your gear and recover a fully functional set of two gloves, made out of the remnants. You will not eliminate in this fashion all your losses, but you will be able to extend the life span of all your gear by minimising your losses, thus reducing your overall costs in the long run. With these two considerations (buying bulk quantities of standard equipment) you can save a lot of money. In some cases, we have experienced cost reductions of around 70%. You may think that using standard things may be boring; you can, of course, purchase whatever you want. However, for most people the possible savings will surely justify the concept. In 1987 we purchased six pairs of heavy-duty gloves used by the Argentine Navy. In 2005 we still have four pairs of those, and we use them for tasks such as building stone cabins and moving around rocks. We think now that these gloves will probably survive us, and it is hard to think that we will ever have to buy any similar gloves again.
