The excessive consumption of sugar is undoubtedly bad for your body; yet, there are people who would put more than six spoons of sugar in their tea, creating effectively saturated solutions of sugar instead of sweet cups of tea.
In the case of outdoor activities, travel adventures and expeditions, especially if they are long-lasting, this vice could cause a serious problem for the whole participating team because they will either have to carry more provisions, or have them vanish before their eyes.
We, the explorers of Andinia always carry honey in addition to sugar; we preferably use honey as a replacement, leaving sugar for chores such as cooking and preparing meals which cannot be prepared other wise, like 'Dulce de leche', also - wrongly - known outside South America as caramel. Honey is much more versatile and has a better nutritional power versus weight ratio, plus, you can use it in more ways. For example, you can put honey over a bread loaf as a substitute for marmalade, jelly or jam. At the very least, we don't get quickly bored with our expedition food.
Both in the case of sugar and honey, we recommend you that before putting those things in your backpack, you should put them inside plastic containers with good seals and big lids. In such way you will avoid the weight and possible complications of glass vessels in which honey and sometimes even sugar are usually sold; and in the case that you got them in plastic bags or recipients, take into account that these are pretty weak and will tend to break inside your pack, pouring the contents, a thing that is quite messy, aside from the small detail that losing your provisions usually means.
For additional safety, you may place those plastic containers inside a bag, so that the contents of your backpack won't get sticky after a while.
