We take advantage of this presentation in order to put forward for you some arguments as to why you should help ecological and environmental initiatives; read the following carefully.

You may probably have already read or heard about the extinction of dinosaurs by the impact of a meteorite, 66,4 million years ago. That is know as the K-T event, which marked the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the Tertiary. It was, indeed, an unfortunate and catastrophic event that caused the demise of a huge biomass on Earth.

However, recent findings in the fields of palaeontology and geology leave this event as child's play by comparison. There was before a much more massive extinction, produced by natural causes, but which could conceivably be repeated, this time, by our own hand.

We present you the mother of all extinctions: the P-T event that market the end of the Permian period and the beginning of the Triassic, a long 245 million years ago. This event exterminated in less than 80.000 years, 95% of all species and living beings in on the face and seas of our planet, annihilating in a blink's eye in geological time thousands of millions of years of life evolution, and as we said, we may be the cause of the next, similar event.

Consider what this means: life has been evolving for at least 3.500 million years, and it takes just one species a million years to evolve. We can wipe them all in less than one thousand of the time that it takes nature just to create one.

Fossil findings in Greenland around 1990 showed that the P-T event, which was previously known but remained unexplained so far, indicated that the event took 80.000 years and went on in three phases, beginning with a gradual extinction of land-based life forms at the same time that great volcanic eruptions took place in what is now Siberia. These cases of vulcanism spanned for tens of thousands of years and were the biggest, most massive on the geological record of Earth.

Then came a second phase of very rapid, almost instant extinction of most marine life forms, both vegetal and animal, and then a third land extinction, also very rapid. The fossils and rock strata of Greenland indicated that a form of carbon known as C 12 was present in exaggerated quantities in the environment at the time of the P-T event.

C 12 is normally released into the atmosphere as dead tissues decay, but the quantities found on those samples showed that accompanying the quick extinction process, enormous concentrations of C 12 were found in the air and water, exceeding by far what could be produced by the then existing biomass as it diet out. However, it is known for a fact that around the base of all continental plaques there are deposits of a form of frozen methane, which releases C 12 in big quantities if and when it melts down.

Thus, the explanation for the P-T event is that massive volcanic activity in Siberia caused a global warming process by means of the greenhouse effect. This - according to analyses - would have raised the average temperature of the planet in about four degrees Celsius, enough to raise the temperature of the seas and warming the frozen methane deposits.

The greenhouse effect would explain by itself the first phase of gradual extinction during the P-T- event. Then, emissions of C 12 and methane into the water would have killed almost anything alive in oceanic waters almost instantly, and as those gasses bubbled out in the atmosphere, they would have had a double effect, intoxicating land and air based environments, as well as raising the global temperatures in about five degrees more, which is enough to transform some place like Scandinavia, into something like the Atacama desert.

All this has been tested and proved: raising our planet's temperature just in four degrees may have an effect similar to what was triggered by the Siberian volcanoes, and we would eventually be the cause - not fate - of our own demise as well as what took nature thousands of years to produce. This is information that is in the hands of scientists; it is necessary that the public becomes informed about it and the dangers of that vague concept we know as global warming. If you are able to, please put a link on your site to this page, so that your visitors will read this and check what we state on their own, if they whish. This is important: there are indications that global warming has already started, but we are still on time to revert the great extinction that may be on the making, just for a handful of dollars which are worthless, really.

So, this was the mother of all extinctions, but then, our really stupid greed will become the mother of all mass destruction weapons, and we should not go into history as the cause of such a disaster. If you love our planet, do something too before it is too late!
