If you are going to purchase equipment for a group of people - i.e. two or more - as opposed to personal gear, we recommend you to seriously consider establishing a set of standards in order to save money and increase the return of your investment in the long run. The same applies if you are going to buy more than one unit for yourself.

Consider this: you buy two completely different sets of rain jackets. After some time, use and abuse, both start falling appart; however, you are in the middle of an expedition and cannot go shopping in order to replace them, so after a while, you loose two jackets.

Now, if you purchase two similar jackets, you may be able to use parts of one in order to give the other a longer life span; this is called cannibalisation, and is used - not by coincidence - by armed forces aroudn the world, even those with hefty budgets, to save on equipment.

Moreover: when the time comes to replace your gear, you purchase similar products of the same brand and model if possible; bear in mind that a complete set of outdoor equipment could cost you a couple of thousands, so instead of replacing 100% of an item because you have no spares for it, you may be able to save a part and give the resulting reconstructed or refurbished item al longer use.

So, if the pros use such a technique, why not you? After all, you have no taxpayers from which to squeeze more money for your jacket.
