Our conception of our world and universe is the result of the struggle between various intellectual models: in our minds we have scientific, metaphysical, artistic and religious perspectives - just to mention a few - and independently of what we observe, what matters is how we interpret facts, according to the result of the interaction of these forces. Very important for us is the concept of the space-time continuum that we have (you see, we interpret these as a continuity), and how to move from one point to another; that is, how to travel.
But what if going from one point to another is not a displacement, but something else? Today we are deeply influenced by scientific thought, which is fine but has some limitations, like other mental models. In the past, we used more religion and metaphysics.
Because of plain ideological agendas, we humans give preponderance to one model or another over time: in the middle ages, religion was not to be discussed. Today, science rules, but whenever a mental model rules, so do its limitations.
Thus, our minds are not really free from the limitations imposed by our way of seeing things, and we should try to advance our intellectual models so as to gain freedom from such limitations, even if we fall prey of new ones in the future. Today, science behaves much like religion in the middle ages; while scientists seek innovation, things that are too far removed from their traditional set of things, even if later they are proved to be correct, are ridiculed.
Religion is being ridiculed in such a way, forgetting that the framework built around that model is what developed civilisation over thousands of years. And an interesting point here is what astral voyages might be, or how to explain them, no matter whether you can really perform such things or not, because from the moment we actually conceive them, they become hypothetical but very present indeed.
After all, men started to think about flying long before anyone could; there were those who said that flying was impossible thought they had proof - in birds - that somehow that can be achieved and the problem always consisted in trying to understand birds and reproduce the mechanisms that allow them to go into the air. Astral voyage could be easily explained mathematically as a displacement within a space of more dimensions than we can mentally conceive and understand.
According to Einstein, our universe has four dimensions, but this is an appreciation proper of the realm of physics, and this science, as respectable as it is, is limited only to the perceptible and deals only with what we can touch and feel the effects of.However, mathematically speaking, we can define infinite dimensions within a given vectorial space. What we understand about them or how we assimilate these to reality, which is indeed banal and limited, is something subjective; however, we can assume, for example, that probability is a fifth dimension, and odds could then be explained as movements within this fifth dimension and in no other.
So, if something happens to you in an instant, or doesn't, would mean that while you remain fixed in the same point in terms of space and time, you would be moving within the dimension of probability. Sounds weird, but it is actually consistent, and that is what matters.
In the same token, we could say that gravity could be assimilated into a unique dimension, and displacements within this realm would explain a lot of interesting things. We may not interpret this in physical terms, but the whole model really works abstractly, like the idea of flying was abstract, or microbes or many other things and event that could not be seen directly and immediately when thought of.
A black hole in space could then be understood as a point in which a particular rotation along the adequate dimensional planes took place, so as to place us in our reality in a coordinate position where we have an infinite displacement along the axis of gravity, and a null one in the vectorial directions proper of space and time. Even the dual nature of waves and particles could be explained using such a model; this is just a matter of perspective, and not of facts.
Science risks becoming a petty analyser of perspectives and blind to the essential, much like religion lost is way in the Middle Ages and did anything but lead by example.
Now imagine a hypercube, but instead of applying four dimensions to it, try to perform rotational movements thorough higher planes. You will get a number of degrees of liberty to toy with it without modifying others. This could explain a lot of things that are happening.
Sounds esoteric, indeed; so was an idea that Wilbur and Orville Wright had one day.
