Hard-to-find books art the ones that are especially worth buying. For the rest of the books, it may well be enough to join a good public library, and for a minute amount of money every year, you will get access to books for all tastes. In a good library you can find everything, from best-sellers to scientific and philosophical material, but it is hard to find there some out-of-stock volumes, or those that were written off from catalogues.

Of course, you also have historical or archaeologically important ancient books that can be seen or read only within the library itself, and by appointment in most cases. You will not be able to purchase these anyway: they can go for millions of euros at very rare and infrequent auctions; there are individuals who want to have such books at home and have very deep pockets, and some collectors even attempt to steal such works with varied success.

However, in the case of 'common' books, public libraries may act even as a help of sorts to save space at home (don't get it wrong, please, here at Andinia we love to have books, but sometimes it is difficult), so getting your wisdom from a public library may be analogous to using those online services that allow you to put pictures and other information on their servers for your personal use, instead of keeping all those files stored in your own personal computer.

And yet there is something else to take into account: public libraries make a lot of ecological sense because their books can be used by lots of people. More that those privately owned, which at least makes that the death of the trees used to produce the paper has not been in vain.
