This Formula will show you EXACTLY how meager odds of even (2-1 on) can be turned into 100's-1 with $1.2 or $3 stakes.

Not all bets are for money: sometimes, betting means your life. H. Melville, author of Moby Dick apparently got inspired on an encounter he had while navigating thorough the Pacific Ocean.

He was travelling in a whaler ship that was finishing its hunting tour, and exchanged a salute with another one just starting it somewhere in the south Pacific; this was not quite a relevant event, except for what happened later. That happened in the mid nineteenth century, when whaling was a full blown, lucrative business with global reach.

Whales were hunted down almost to extinction because they were a valuable resource, particularly the 'oil' extracted from their bodies, and which was used - among other things - as a combustible. Whaler ships of that time were fast vessels of the last generation of tall ships, similar to clippers or today's frigates, but a little sturdier because of their design as floating factories.

When one of these ships went to sea, it remained their until their hunted sufficient whales to fill their cargo decks with oil and meat. Then, these ships returned either to their original ports, or went to strategically located factories found at various islands and isolated points, where they unloaded their cargo and sailed again.

These little harbours sprout not necessarily where there was a stable population: many were only dedicated to attending whalers, like in the case of Grytviken in South Georgia - disputed between Argentina and the U.K. - and the Southern Orkney Islands; by the way, this last settlement erected by Argentine whalers around 1824 was the first ever recorded human occupation of Antarctica.

Islands were explored with this purpose and whaling replaced such proportions that depletion of whale species became a problem, and then an ecological disaster. Because of this and the advent of fossil fuels, the whole industry entered a down slope and never recovered; not that it will be missed by anyone, but it serves as an example of how the irresponsible use of natural resources under the pretence of favouring economic activity does in the end, destroy the economy.

Make no mistake: a huge number of people lost fortunes and jobs because of the depletion of whale species. Republicans int he USA, please read more history, for if you don't, you will only repeat it.

But according to Mr. Melville, the ship in question exchanged salutations and messages with his, and continued with its tour which at the time was starting. Months later, Melville and his fellow crew maters knew that the other whaler never made it back to Nantucket, USA, to where it belonged.

Yet, almost half a year later, a lie boat filled with survivors hanging to their lives appeared on the coast of Chile; these were survivors of that lost ship, including the Captain. They told the authorities that as they went whaling, they zeroed on a big whale which was crossed with scars and fight marks. When they tried to kill it, instead the animal attacked the ship causing a number of waterways which they were unable to repair.

So the ship sank in a few minutes and they were left on a couple of boats, thousands of nautical mile saway from anywhere.

It is possible that whales actually fight against big squids; this has been some sort of a myth, but actually in deep waters around New Zealand, an unknown species of giant squids has been recently been identified. So perhaps the whale in question was a gung-ho fighter defending its freedom indeed.

They climbed onto the boats; one or two disappeared, never to be seen again. The remaining, knowing they approximate position, decide to make it for Easter Island or the coast of South America, and began a long journey in that direction. But they had no food and soon began to starve; after trying to fish, after eating all the leather available, and trying everything else, they organised a lottery of sorts: the losers were condemned to execution and being eaten.

Indeed, a couple of those survivors lost their bets, and then were promptly shot; then, the rest of the survivors - including, in one case, some relatives of the deceased - dismembered the bodies and, like in other cases of cannibalism, looked particularly for the hearth and muscular tissue and simply ate them still fresh and warm.

Bon appetit.
