It is interesting to think sometimes about the number of different dog races that we have around, because in this regard, biology seems today to change more rapidly than superficially evident. We may think that Boxers are immutable as a race, or that changes in them, as in the case of any other dog type, occur very slowly and only become evident after tens or hundreds of thousands of years.

However, we have to remember that domestication in general of some animals began around twelve thousand years ago; this includes household animals as well as cattle. And archaeological records indicate that the same races that accompany us to day where nowhere in sight in the past. There were no Boxers or Dobermans around and indeed there were other, different races.

We can extrapolate the case of the Gauls, the Celtic tribes that inhabited present-day France before the Roman invasion, around the year 50 B.C.; it is known thanks to Roman inventories of their conquest that the local inhabitants were mostly farmers that raised cattle. Cows and pigs were preferred, but theirs were quite different from what we expect to find today at a rural establishment: smaller, sturdier and looking like what we would call wild cattle today, it seems.

A similar thing could be inferred about dogs, and that was just about two thousand years ago. Are these changes good, anyway? It is hard to tell, because these have been products of forced or accelerated evolution provoked by the contact of these animals with human beings.

Species in a natural state last or survive for about 1,5 million years before notable changes make them go extinct or transform into something else and markedly different. This means that changes in lower degrees, like the appearance or disappearance of races within the same species are somewhat faster, but never so drastic as what we are seeing now.
