The study of survival as a discipline can be divided into various areas: generally it is assumed that survival techniques are only applicable within a military or extreme outdoor environment: however, statistically speaking, a regular, average citizen dwelling in a mid to large size city confronts as many hazards as a solider in combat, a skydiver or a bungee jumper. This may seem an exaggeration, but it is true: street fighting, gangs, armed robbery, rape and other criminal acts are so common now that most people even barely notice them unless they are directly touched by such deeds and their perpetrators: while at the same time, these criminals seem to act under the umbrella of laws, principles and regulations that have already proved that they work only to the advantage of those trying to harm others.
All thorough our planet's history, living species and individuals had to develop their own survival abilities or perish: so, betting that the police, the state, social workers and human rights activists will eventually get us rid of all these problems and menaces is very much like gambling on Russian roulette. In fact, the thing that you are gambling in both cases is your own life indeed, and considering that we only live once, you have more than just a compelling reason to learn how to defend yourself.
