Why Not Fly Free

Many histories have appeared over time about low-cost or even free air travel; this fact, when associated with the seemingly incomprehensible tariff policies adopted by almost all airlines creates a lot of confusion. Of course, if you then add to the soup the increasing costs of fuel, which represents a significant fraction of the total cost of air travel, then the thing becomes even more confusing because many price variations are now being justified on the basis of oil prices, which to a certain extent is true, but - being some of us at Andinia aircraft pilots too - as we know, this fact is used to further inflate the existing tariffs.

In other words, it is only partly true that air travel prices rise because of the cost of fuel; the intention to cover up grater profit margins with the excuse of increasing costs is there too. So, perhaps it is time again to think about lowering travel costs in any possible way, and is true: you can actually travel either for free, or for ridiculously low costs, but you have to search a little and be patient.

It would be impossible to describe all possible techniques to do so in a brief article or comment like this one, but let' say that taking advantage of mileage programs offered by many airlines can actually work very well to your advantage, in this regard. Mileage programs allow you to gain a score based on how much you travel with a specific airline, and then you can exchange that score, when it reaches a certain minimum, by airplane tickets.

This is not new, but by planning well in advance your trips you can virtually travel for free many times; traveling in first or business class also increases your score, albeit we would not recommend this to most travelers since these superior classes are far more expensive than real service delivered justifies. Airline accountants use to arrange prices so that tourist class passengers make each flight break even, and essentially, profits are obtained from business and first class passengers; so, you are charged far more than you would expect for the service received, which is generally good, although really superfluous in most cases.

If your want to travel in style, it's ok, but be advised that style in this case would cost you five times more than normal, and we are not kidding. So, if you are rally trying to save money and travel nearly for free or for no cost a tall, it makes very little sense to actually spend more for an apparent greater comfort: your flight will ever take the same time, and you will travel at the same hours, to the same airports and thorough the same weather.

Whether you will be able to rest better is another question: if you are accustomed to sleeping anywhere, you will have no trouble and indeed, you will enjoy first or business class, but if you are of the type that cannot sleep well, then a better or bigger seat, more space or reclining angle are really superfluous, and you will do better taking a siesta after you arrive than spending thousands for insomnia over the clouds.
