The notion of 'property' has always existed in our world, since humans formed the first societies after becoming sedentary; in diverse cultures and societies, rights of property are interpreted in very different ways. For example, in present-day Russia, owners may lose their property rights if the constructions made on the soil that belongs to them are destroyed. So, if you are a Russian and an earthquake destroys your home, you may lose your property, and the same may happen if you fall victim to arson.

Indeed, this rather strange interpretation of property rights may be used to expel the rightful owners of land using sabotage, arson and similar means, in order to later occupy their land. And this may even become legal if after making everyone leave, the interested party purchases the land from the state at ridiculous prices.

Among pre-Incaic cultures in what later was to become the Inca Empire, property rights were tightly associated with ancestry: every single proprietor kept his rights over a piece of land on the basis of the graves that where there. So, grave profanation was more than just the robbery of jewels or a religious issue of pretty bad taste, because once a grave had been desecrated, it lost its value in terms of the associated properties.

Thus, in order to expel people from their lands, you only had to desecrate the tombs of their ancestors, - of course - take their jewels and gifts for the afterlife, and then publicly say that ownership rights had been left vacant.

But don't dare to feel safe because you are neither a Russian nor an Indian: modern states consider themselves immune from prosecution in many aspects, so if you win a lawsuit against the state, wherever you are, they might just refuse to pay you, give you property or whatever.

The state might not do that right now, but it is still to be seen whether they will or will not resort to such measures under economic duress.
