A fact that is not well known by people is that hair is more common among animals that it might be thought initially; not only mammals have hair sprouting out of the skin, but pterodactyls also had it in large quantities. These flying reptiles evolved side-by-side with dinosaurs and the early mammals; they apparently shared characteristics from both but were neither.

People think that they were in some way related to dinosaurs or birds, but that is not the case, because divisions between dinosaurs, mammals and pterodactyls from a main group of reptiles go back more than two hundred million years; the wing of a pterodactyl is formed by the elongated fingers of its hands, and not like in the case of birds, by the whole arms, neither it follows any anatomical resemblance to the wing of bats.

It is a fact that pterodactyls had hair covering their bodies; so indicate some fossil remains found. These animals coexisted with mammals until the great extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period (the K-T event) and had hair which was strikingly similar to ours; however, it has not been demonstrated if both families of animals evolved their hair from a single source or it just appeared as yet another case of genetic convergence.

It seems that pterodactyls appeared in what is now Italy, and slowly became widespread thorough the world; one of the last places that they conquered was Patagonia before their extinction.

Among pterodactyls, we have to mention the species 'Qetzalcoatlus northropi;' these were the largest flying animals that so far existed, reaching a wingspan of 15 metres.
