It is interesting to see how some sports need a lot of time, advertisement and effort to become somewhat popular, while others, without any effort at all, become an instant success even in spite of prohibitions. American football, or what the people in the United States know as football, is a derivative of rugby, which is a derivative of the traditional and original English football that some try to call soccer in order to rob the football part of its name, of course, as an attempt to promote something different.

Franchises running American Football teams spend huge sums of money and are behind this robbery of not intellectual but cultural property; the true football is the English one; soccer is a concocted name that has historically nothing to do with it. This fact is not well understood by those attempting to promote the game which is so popular in the United States: the fact that they are trying to rob the name of the sport is one of the main reasons for the rest of the planet not adopting their game because they love their football.

American football is okeay, but it is not the original football, so it is incorrect to call it like that.

The rules of the true football were set by the British during the nineteenth century, and was turned into a popular hit in Argentina, a few years later: many British citizens emigrated to Argentina during the second half of the nineteenth century, and they took their sport with them. Argentineans just loved it and it became a sort of national sport almost overnight.

From there, it went to the rest of the countries in the American continent, where people also loved it - especially in Brazil -, while in Europe it continued to become popular, perhaps not as fast, but equally well. But the only thing that the British did in the nineteenth century about the game was to set some sort of rules; football already existed for a long time but it was a brutal affair.

Besides, it suffered many prohibitions during centuries because feudal leaders wanted their serfs to train in the skills and arts of war with sports like spear throwing, horse riding and the use of bows and arrows. So, unless what happens with the Yankee version of football, the original one needed no promotion at all.

Indeed, today football is quite an industry, but there is a lot of art in it also, and you can see how the game was in the past if you go to one of those Italian medieval festivals to watch a game of Calcio, an old version with old rules, where people really get hurt - someone lost an ear a few years ago.

People like Maradona, Pele or Di Stefano are not fabricated superstars, but ordinary fellows who show exceptional talent for this game; and that is the seductive power of football: anyone can participate and become the day's superstar, something that is quite unusual in other sports and in life itself.

And last but not least: remember, don't call it soccer, but football; why should we speak incorrectly when we can do it right?
