One of the problems that citizens of the United States are facing now is the way in which a lot of people are gaining too much weight; this is a scientifically verified fact, and answers must be found for various reasons. Changes in diet, junk food, lifestyle problems and so on are certainly parts of this equation which today leaves the country with about 30% of its population exceeding the average weight for healthy males and females. A way to roughly calculate adequate body weight is to get a person's height in centimetres, and take 100 of the total. The number left is the approximate weight in kilograms that a man of that stature should have; for females, the number to substract is 105. Example, a male of 1,65 m. should weight 65 kg, while a woman of the same height, about 60 kilograms. This is of course, an approximation and there are ethincal, age and other variations; however, if your body weight exceeds 20% of this value, you may well be on your way to obesity, plain and simple. Things have gone so badly in this regard, that actually aircraft transport companies have recurrent problems with mass and weight calculation for their aircraft, and even couch and coffin manufacturers had to increase the size and bulk structure of their products to accomodate bigger and heavier bodies. In the case of small, general aviation aircaft, this borders with real danger: most small aircraft have been designed around a weight of 77kg per pasenger, on average. Aircaft cannot fly safely if these figures are exceeded by far. In this regard, sports and outdoor activities are an answer, at least partially; it is important to educate all the population to appreciate the benefits of sports, fitness and an active lifestyle.
