Dogs are very interesting animals that are bending our definition of 'humanity,' and turning it into something that does not always and exclusively involve the 'homo sapiens' as such because some of the daily attitudes of dogs go far beyond instinct, Pavlovian traits or non-rational habits. It is evident that dogs and other animals like cats, monkeys, whales, dolphins and elephants think and make use of what they produce with their minds. Indeed, they are not currently thinking about classical poetry or surrealist art, but they are capable of elaborating reasoning sequences.
The main problem that they face in this sense is their lack of adaptation for efficient communication in a way compatible with us; it is possible that over time they may develop the anatomical elements and gestures required for doing so, even to the point of actual talking, but this can only take place over millions of years. However, nothing is impossible and after all, we humans developed these communicational capabilities in such a way.
And as we currently speculate if there is intelligent life outside Earth, we just have to look below, at the floor, to find another forms of intelligence; thinking is not the exclusive right or ability of men, and as we are beginning to understand more and more about our own psychology, we are realising that intelligence, in fact, has been provided to other animals too.
Intelligence is, after all, a natural adaptation like flying in the case of birds, insects and so on; it is evident that there was one first species of birds that was transformed from terrestrial dinosaurs into actual birds, the first species, but since that distant day, an incredible number of species with such adaptations have appeared. So, why think that intelligence is and will remain as our own?
