When we talk about exploring our universe, most people - the majority, perhaps - understand that we are talking about physical exploration, using spacecraft capable of taking us to other planets and maybe one day, to other solar systems. But the truth is that the cosmos is not only composed of matter and material things; our thoughts and abstractions are also part of it.
Regarding abstractions in particular, we can say that they allow us to conceive things that have not been found yet, or other that are long gone and vanished. Abstraction differs from matter: it does not depend on time, mass or speed. Thus, since abstractions form part of our universe and are not influenced by physical laws but as far as we know, only our minds, then they are like a new dimension that is out of the range of relativity theory.
But do abstractions exist in our minds or are our thoughts copycats, clones or simulations of things that really exist, somewhere? If thoughts only existed in our minds, then we would not have memories.
On the other hand, we cannot say that all things that come up in our brains have been seen or found elsewhere. Thus, it is interesting and very suggestive to think that we have something of a common world of dreams in our heads, like what H.P Lovecraft conceived in his novels, because this real is independent from time, age, people and space.
Then, not the whole universe seems to be ruled by physical laws; instead, it seems more likely that our visual and tangible world is just only the fraction of the cosmos that we have learned to toy with, manipulate and understand, while there are other extensions that we can only barely preview with our minds, and these call for exploration. What can we do with our imagination? Anything, even creating impossible things out of nowhere and bringing them to the material world, and just ask any famous inventor to confirm this.
Imagination as apart of our universe is somewhat undervalued because of cultural issues derived from our own society. We shall become free from our own opinions in order to expand our horizons.
We should try to see imagination, instead of as some sort of toy, as a tool that we may be able to use better in the future, because fantasies, good or bad, indeed have a lot of influence in our world and have already caused great events in our history. Thus, if we are witnessing something, some process or thing that has so much influence in our world, why not really learn to use it? Maybe we are centimeters away from an epochal moment, so important as when humans learned how to manipulate and start fires. We can only imagine how far we could go with a different perspective about our own minds.
