Commercial passenger transportation by sea had its heyday back in the beginning of the twentieth century, at a time when European powers were busy planning to destroy each other and people fled starvation, poverty, intolerance and underdevelopment there. So began one of the biggest migratory fluxes to countries like Canada, the United States, Australia, Brazil and Argentina, which received the highest proportion of foreigners ever, even more than the U.S.A.: more than half the population at any given time was migratory.
Shipping companies offered back them superb luxury to first class passengers, but they knew all too well that their money was made transporting third class passenger, mostly migrants, to the new world. Despite the hefty sums that luxury passengers had to pay, ships became only profitable thanks to the money of the often-despised third class.
However, after WWII ended, things changed: people began travelling by air, and the migratory flux stopped, and then somewhat reversed: Europe in particular began receiving African and Middle East immigrants. Since they were and still are for the most part unwanted, no stimuli was given to any company trying to cater to that market; plus, no ship is needed when there is a continental mass in direct contact with the intended destination of migratory masses.
So passenger shipping went into decadence, but in recent years it was brilliantly reinvented. However, today naval passenger transport concentrates in the luxury tourist market: hence the luxury cruises that seem to be popping out of the water around the world, and it seems that their numbers even surpass that of transatlantics during the classical days of glory, when they ruled the seas.
These new ships are equally massive, and being virtual floating cities, they need a lot of services and dedicated personnel; so there is in fact a job market there, rather well paid and very interesting indeed. This website does a good job presenting all these opportunities in this segment of the travel and marine industries.
