And speaking of security and such things, we have to recommend to the border patrol forces of both Argentina and Chile, the Gendarmeria and the Carabineros, respectively, that they should keep an eye over the local inhabitants of border areas, particularly in some regions of the long common border that these countries share. Concretely speaking, in the area of the Motoco valley, a couple of kilometres north of the Puelo lacustre system that both countries share, we have found some hidden trail that are not used by tourist, they lead across the international border - that constitutes illegal crossing, by the way - and could be used for smuggling cattle, cigarettes, maybe drugs and narcotics - there are plantations of such stuff in the region - and maybe, even things related to international terrorism. The fact is that these trails are quite hidden, they are off the normal tourist areas and have been constructed with what is evidently some degree of effort just a couple of kilometres north from an international, open border crossing point; so the conclusion is that the people who goes thorough this trail wants to avoid that international border pass. We have even witnessed some 'persuasion' made by the people there to convince visitors not to dig too deeply or explore the area. In this world in which terrorism is taking its toll, no one should allow such things to happen; the local inhabitants of the Motoco area should be warned about this and the deeds of individuals should be monitored more closely. |
