Travelling on ferries is always an interesting thing to do; for those accustomed to rough seas, even the worst storm may be quite interesting, but setting aside foul meteorology, let us say that sailing on a ferry, while not as fast as flying, also has some advantages: in Europe, the skies are very congested and sometimes delays become so frequent and long, that the advantage of speed becomes utterly lost and even slower transportation becomes faster.

For example, you may take the 45-minute flight between Paris and London, but if the captain suddenly informs that 'there will be a short delay,' you may end flying in circles for two more hours, depending on what caused the delay in the first place.

Ferries offer a good number of amenities, you can walk around, shop, eat at a restaurant and spend your time more or less like if you were visiting a shopping centre. It is not something that you would like to do every day, and is also not for those travelling in a hurry, but is relatively more cheap than flying and for the infrequent traveller or tourist, it may be an experience in itself.

There are some routes in Europe that are, however, a little bit long and you would like to reserve a cabin, especially if you travel with children. Crossing from the UK to France or Belgium hardly justifies that, but routes such as those to Scandinavia - take Bergen as an example - may merit a short nap before arrival.

But what always seemed odd to us is why Europeans purchase so many bottles of alcoholic beverages while riding on a ship, a situation that makes more than one feel sick.
