dogs are very smart animals: it has been demonstrated that they can understand 250 words, average and with no problems. An adult human being uses about 2.000 words for effective and fluid communication, while children and people of low education may use between 200 and 500 words. Thus, dogs can understand a number of words that fall between the average numbers used in the case of a sizable proportion of humankind.

So, a dog can and should be treated - at least for now - like a small child: as an intelligent, little being; ignoring a dog or treating it badly amounts to nothing useful. Instead, if we try to really educate it, he or she will soon surprise us; dogs can develop their intellect more than we can imagine.

Of course, they have their limitations; however, with enough stimuli they can achieve high levels of intelligent action. They cannot talk, but they can express themselves and understand us as well.

Having a 'conversation' with a dog is possible and it may not just be limited to expressing moods by means of guttural sounds: dogs can understand words and learn from them further than what the Pavlovian reflex dictates.

And considering encephalic mass and volume, the fact that we have more than them is not really such a big, deterministic issue: their brains are about the same size than those of small human children, the Neanderthal men had bigger brains than we, 'Homo sapiens' do, and cetaceans have bigger brains as well as a more developed cortex as well.

Thus, instead of felling comfortably numb as the rulers of nature, we may start beginning to look a little more at zoology and what it can teach us, because animals are more similar than we may initially suspect. It is only a matter of communication.
