Some of the disciplines of the occult of today formed an integrated whole with some of our current sciences. According to our view - here at Andinia -, these disciplines cannot be considered as occult sciences, or sciences of the occult, simply because they do not make use of the scientific method as their basis for development.

To call them para-sciences or pseudo-sciences would also be mistaken, since this also establishes alleged parallelisms between science and the occult, that would be exactly as wrong as to call them sciences. However, since there is a common origin in the case of these disciplines, like alchemy and astrology, as related to chemistry on one side, and astronomy and astrophysics in the other, it may be fair to call them proto-sciences because in this term, the idea that they have a common origin is clear.

We have to be careful in distinguishing actual science from what is not science, and essentially, the difference between proto-sciences like astrology and its scientific counterparts, astronomy and astrophysics lies in the fact that they became sciences since their developers began using the scientific method, in many cases using originally the knowledge they acquired as proto-scientists, when they were still - in this case - astrologists.

Remarkable individuals like Giordano Bruno and Johannes Kepler made this subtle but significant change of perspective, and as they continued to explore and investigate further, new hypotheses began appearing which conflicted with their old ones, based on the astrological or proto-scientific method. Thus, with their new, entirely rational outlook, they adopted the new explanations as proven theories, and abandoned the old ones. However, this should not be derogatory for proto-sciences; what happens is that the rational method of science explains some phenomena better, and that is all; science is a form of knowledge, like religion, metaphysics and others, but is neither the sole for or knowledge, neither the truth.

People can adopt a posture lying in a continuum that goes from purely rational thought to pure belief; that is up to each one of us. But however respectable each form of thought and each method may be, things should not be presented as something else in order to gain acceptance or credibility because such affirmations can easily be refuted, and the posterior effect proves to be quite counterproductive.

And this is so because when such things happen, not only the mistake itself comes under scrutiny; instead, the whole system that those affirmations intended to support is questioned or receives a bad image.
