Music forms part today of our lives; we use it to go to work, to do sports, to travel, and to change or enhance our mood. It is also a cultural expression inherently linked to the degree of technological advancement that exists in any society: Moog could not have invented the synthetizer if electronics and computer technology had not existed at the time, in the relatively mature state that they had achieved by then.

But music is indeed not exclusive to our civilisation, and it always played a vital role in the rites, folklore, government acts and even wars waged by other civilisations and cultures; musical instruments and musicians have been integrated in armies and armadas for a long time, not only to inspire patriotism and improve the feelings of the troops and the population towards the armed forces, but also to improve discipline, coordinate the movement of thousands of individual soldiers, horses and weapons, to give orders and to communicate.

The kind of instruments selected for use in military - brass and percussion, for the most part - is no coincidence: the sounds produced by them are audible even in the very noisy and complicated conditions found in a battlefield.

The Ottoman Turks reached extreme heights in this regards after creating what was the biggest military band of all time, and the oldest as well: the Mether band had after its creation, a thousand years ago, over a thousand musicians and instruments. It still exists as a military unit within the Turkish army, although it is not so big now.

The idea behind this was to have a really loud band; chronicles tell us that it could be heard in a 30 km radius, and this acted as a powerful psychological weapon to instil fear in any enemy found nearby.
