Catastrophic events such as the tsunami of south east Asia that wiped out hundreds of thousands of lives in December 2004, and the passage of hurricane Katrina over New Orleans, Biloxi and other cities in the south eastern United States in August 2005 are showing that nobody is really safe from natural disasters. Nobody can assume now that because he or she lives in the developed world, the fate may be any different from what someone living in a poor country may expect, for a one way free ticket to the third world takes just a matter of hours, even in nations that believe that they are all mighty.

But after the natural catastrophe - or provoked by humans - comes reconstruction. However, if we consider that recovering from the loss of a job, the death of one relative, the destruction of your car in an accident or a fire at home may take a lot of effort, we should try to understand what might be to recover from the loss of absolutely everything except what you are wearing.

Indeed, recovery will come the day after tomorrow, but for what could be observed in the case of New Orleans, it is not just a matter of money and economics, but the sad fact that governments around the world are now too focused in economical issues and are very badly prepared to understand such events, both from a moral as well as from a technical standpoint, all the while rampage, crime and disease continue to take its toll.

No matter what Mr. Bush says - remember, we can-t call him 'Doctor' because he has almost no college education - climate change is here and disasters as those that we are witnessing around the globe will likely increase in frequency and magnitude.

The fact that oil industry aficionados are telling that there is no data to link oil consumption to global warming is simply a lie based either in ignorance or greed: everything is connected in our planet, and continuing to rely in fossil fuel would be extremely hazardous and irresponsible because there are two possibilities: either they are right in which case, anyway, we will run out of fuel in a few decades and live thorough other set of disasters due to fuel starvation; or they are wrong, in which case, we will all suffer for their greed and ignorance.

Most big cities around the world are barely elevated over sea level, and the tragedy of New Orleans can and will be repeated scores of times with no resources to help unless there is a dramatic change in the way governments do things.

For common people, it is a fact that survival training, good insurance policies to protect their assets and the need to put a lot of pressure over politicians should become part of their daily lives.

Climate change is here; we must revert it before it is too late.
