How to create an incredible lawn in your garde in 4 days.

Undisputedly, lawn is a human invention; nature doesn't mown the grass it has invented and doesn't care for aesthetic or gardening considerations, aside from keeping natural evolution going on. However, lawn and its natural cousin, grass, may be more interesting than you think at first sight.

The pilot of a distressed aircraft would welcome the sight of a good lawn field in order to perform an emergency landing; a big garden, park or sports field could be a life-saving blessing for those on a small aircraft under such circumstances. Depending on the colour of the soil, as seen from an altitude, it is relatively easy to determine if the landing operation will be secure or not: the darker the soil and vegetation gets, the higher will be the proportion of water contained in it.

Thus, the ground will be softer and more slippery. This means that landing will be more difficult; however, the drier the soil is, and the lighter the colours are, the better; with such conditions and aircraft under an emergency, provided that there is enough space, will land almost normally. So, now you know: if you see a small aircraft on a football field or golf court, maybe its pilot just saved a couple of lives.

There are indeed aircraft capable of taking off and landing safely over very short strips of unprepared terrain. These are known as STOL (Short Take Off and Landing), and need in some cases, no more than twenty metres to fly or perform a full stop, like in an aircraft carrier but without hooks.

Models like the Fieseler Storch, Piper Cub, Aviat Huski, Aero Boero and others will in fact turn in a dime and make very good use of football fields, parks, beaches and such places. This goes well for lawn or grass, only that natural grass has not been mowed and pilots would have to look for stones or other hidden obstacles.

After flying from many mowed lawn and grass fields we had to clean the rudder and landing gear of our aircraft many times: plants tend to stick to them, and cleaning takes a while. Many aviators will tell you that using grass, lawn or unprepared dirt, coral or gravel runways are better than concrete and asphalt contraptions.

Sometimes they are, and sometimes the are not; however, they are much more fascinating, and bear no doubt: these airfields are among the places where grass receives the best of treatments, unless cows and horses - like it does happen in some places - regularly go into the runway, leaving marks, dung and bumpy holes. Those landings are really interesting.

But the best part of going to grass airfields is that if you are flying with an old plane, you just don't enjoy the adventure that is travelling thorough the air, but thorough time as well, and as we finish this, we are going to manually crank the propeller of the Piper Cub standing near here, and will go to some grass airfield again and return before lunch.

Take good care of your lawn, and maybe one day we will go and land there to have a cup of te.
