Eating is something that indeed is necessary, pleasant in many cases and a true form of art; gourmet cuisine is seen today not anymore as a craft, but as a true - if brief - form of art. Preparing a banquet is also a form of art, but not only because it needs a chef who is considered an artist, but also because of many other things that implicitly go with it.
But it wasn't like this always: in the past, banquets were also state and political events and - in many cases - serious risks for the survival of the participants. Even Niccolo Macchiavelli described such an occasion, in which Cesare Borgia organised a state banquet in order to enhance his power over the central region of Italy.
The Birgia family, constituted by the then pope Alexander VII, his son Cesare and daughter Lucrecia, were committed to using the power of the Catholic Church for personal gain, but in order to do that, they needed to stabilise the political scene in the Romagna, which is the region that surrounds the city of Rome and where many petty nobles had been struggling with each other for a long time, incapable of prevailing one over the other, but quite capable of causing major trouble all the time.
So, Cesare invited them to Sinigaglia, where and when all sorts of dishes were lavishly served along with wine and all sorts of exotic things. The guests soon found themselves eating and talking, but when they were at in earnest, suddenly a number of hidden men - one for each guest - appeared from behind the curtains that surrounded the room where the table was, and promptly killed every single person, except the host which of course, was the entrepreneur mind that in just one banquet finally solved the whole issue of central Italy.
However, we don't know if Cesare finished eating early or he stayed until the dessert was served.
