A few day ago, while we were finishing an instrument flying training session in a simulator we ran across a young man from Uruguay who is taking flying lessons because he just bought himself an amphibian airplane and indeed, wants to get his pilot license in order to fly it.

This person has no money problems, which is a polite way to say that he is filthy rich: he always came into the local airport with his shiny BMW sports car. However, this time we saw him with a modest, diesel engine, seemingly used Volkswagen; very inexpensive indeed. We were not surprised by the fact that this person still trusts German engineering; however, this sudden display of Franciscan etiquette was so remarkable that pilots, instructors, mechanics and even airport police guards began wondering if the man in question was joking, gone fishing or what.

But that was not the case: he said that riding his BMW has driven him- so to speak - rather paranoid because everyone looked at his car, beggars looked at him and locked on him as a missile's target, pedestrians looked too much into his car's interior and he was even afraid of those on the streets as he went in and out of his home. So, he decided to change his looks and his car paradigm.

As far as we know, he still has his car and now his airplane, but says that his used diesel-powered German marvel has taken him into the comfort of utter anonymity.

So, it seems that owning a superb sports car is also a reason to get a used vehicle, or isn't?
