Amazon.com - F 198

Bibliography and reference material on Farman F 198 aircraft. Farman is one of the names associated with the dawn of aviation; Henry Farman was a true competitor of the Wright Brothers in the development of the first factible airplanes, along with others like Glenn Curtiss, Santos Dumont and Octave Chanute. But Farman was also one of the precursors in the manufacture of planes and responsible for many great advances in the early days of aeronautics.

Today, and perhaps because of the subdued rivalry and ill feelings between the United States and France, many new literary works portray this rivalry in somewhat exaggerated way. Naturally, the yanks appear as the victors because they were indeed the first to develop a viable aircraft, but also because many of these new works have been published in the United States.

However, we have to remember that the Wright brothers soon after their first powered flights at Kitty Hawk, found their way to France when confronted with a remarkable indifference against their developments in their own country.

Farman went on to become probably the biggest aircraft manufacturer until the end of WWI, when the company ceased to exist independently - as may others - due to their inability to readapt to a largely civilian market. Info on other Farman models available here.
