Ironically, we can say that humankind invented its outdoor equipment long before it invented furniture or any sort of tool. Our primitive ancestors had to develop tools, weapons and clothing required for survival in a hostile environment, totally outdoors and without event thinking about civilization.
That came afterwards as a consequence of convenience. Those periods in which creative active seems to have been at high points are the same in which humankind was put to the test, and for all we know, this started about eight million years ago in Africa.
Then, a series of epochal environmental changes took place in the central region of the continent, where a large number of primates were already living.T he continent began to break apart thorough a rift that still exists and will eventually cut Africa in two parts; this geological feature goes from the horn that forms the entrance to the Red Sea, and approximately over the area of the great African lakes and down to the Zambezi river.
This rift is the responsible for human evolution. When the rift began to evolve, the central province occupied by primates was suddenly split apart in two sections divided by a central series of very inaccessible topographical features.
To the west, the environment continued to be much the same as it was before, and in the tropical rainforest, primates that stayed there eventually became chimpanzees and gorillas. On the other side of the rift, the environment suffered drastic changes and rainforests dried out; the jungle became open plains and thus, the primates living there had to adapt in order to survive.
They had no more trees, hence they descended to the ground and adopted a bipedal gait, which was more efficient for gathering and running; they had by then their hands free, and they began to use them. With hands free, a bipedal, fast gait, a harder environment and the need to find food farther away, as well as the obvious presence of predators, these primates had the essential elements and pressures to use another feature: their intelligence.
So they improved their locomotion and capacity to manipulate objects, and at the same time, their brains evolved. Slowly, their tools became more sophisticated - by the way, it is fair to say that chimpanzees also can produce their own tools.
Over millions of years, these primitives began manufacturing the first types of outdoor equipment, literally; they needed those items to survive, and slowly they began acquiring a competitive environmental advantage. Our tents and outdoor gear are nothing more and nothing less that technological elaborations of memories deeply ingrained into our collective memory, still lingering on from those times when we descended from trees long vanished.
