Amazon.com - Farman Aircraft

Books, magazines, news and other stuff on Farman aeroplanes. This has been one of the great manufacturers of aircraft during the first years of evolution of modern aviation, and designed a prolific family of different planes. Henry Farman, founder of the company, was indeed one of the forefathers of aviation, and also a personal rival of the Wright brothers, who were the first humans to construct and fly a practical aeroplane, despite that recently, others claim that it was Santos Dumont the first adventurer turned into pilot.

Santos Dumont was indeed the first to take off with a plane without using an assisting catapult; however, he was not the first to fly a propelled aircraft. The Wright brothers used a catapult to assist their 'Flyer' to get into the air, but pretending to dismiss this as the first human flight is absurd and the inconsistence of the argument sustained mainly in Brazil is easily demonstrated: if a plane would cease to be a plane because it takes off assisted by a catapult, then what goes off from aircraft carriers would not be combat planes but kites.

At the time of Farman and Santos Dumont - no doubt - many would have preferred that the distinction would have gone to someone else instead of the then obscure Wright brothers. However, the two lads from Dayton, Ohio, where indeed the 'first.'

In any case, Santos Dumont, Langley, Chanute, Bell, Curtiss and of course Farman, should carry the honour of having been among the first humans daring enough to try to fly.
