Survivalism is a discipline that unfortunately does not enjoy quite a good image among the public; events like the Y2K bug, when some individuals bought food, weapons and fuel enough to last until judgement day appeared on TV as apocalyptic, uninstructed and fear inspiring. When many fell to the spell of the weapons of mass destruction that never appeared in Iraq, the same kind of individuals bought yet more weaponry, respirators, gas masks, and food to last during the whole of an Iraqi massive, cold-war style attack that, naturally, did not come either.

And in the same token, we can count a vast number of occasions in which in a tabloid-like manner we watch on TV how these fellow get out of their pick-up trucks wearing their boots and little hats with agricultural machinery logos, go into a store and come out with a car full of assault rifles, that almost surely, they do not know even hot to use safely. This is the image of survivalism among most people around the world, unfortunately.Nut survival is something that we do since we are on this planet.

Survival techniques and survivalism as a discipline are based on solid facts and requirements observed thorough a number of situations that are very likely: if you go on trekking, you may get lost in the woodlands or in the jungle; aircraft and ship do suffer accidents in the middle of nowhere, with dire consequences, and then, we have wars, tsunamis, monsoons and volcanic eruptions. If you are keen on extreme sports or adventure travel, you must assume that - shopping carts packed with rifles aside - you may confront a survival situation one day, and you better be prepared.

Don't guide your judgement by movies, merchants trying to sell you things and people with apocalyptic minds; just follow the logic established by facts and real needs because if you don't, you will disarm yourself of the knowledge, skills and equipment that may one day save your life or at least spare you of quite a lot of anxiety. These situations do appear at any moment: if you are driving your car along a road for the most innocent of motives, and your vehicle breaks down, then you will probably have to ask for help, and what if no one comes or the road is empty?

A simple incident may in fact, evolve into a hazardous or unpleasant situation.Similarly, terrorists attack anywhere, anytime; tsunamis do appear when tourists are sunbathing, and volcanoes do erupt over towns ripe with visitors. Just remember Pompeii and Herculanum.

At Andinia we believe that basic survival techniques should be part of any school's curriculum, including self-defence, first aid and panic control techniques; at any rate, schools should prepare students for modern life. This would not be very difficult or costly to implement and would even add an interesting twist to lessons and school days that currently are boring for most who participate in them.
