The design of a good workplace increases safety, security and productivity; it lowers labour risks and the danger of accidents. Sometimes, the difference between a normal day and a catastrophe lies exclusively in how good the design work has been, because human factors will always conspire against absolute safety and efficiency; these factors must be addressed proactively.
Waiting for problems to show themselves and accidents to happen is not prudent, and quite expensive; more than any design work. Creating a good workplace environment - be it the command bridge in a ship or a simple office in some building - should not be guided only by aesthetical considerations, but functionality and safety.
Ergonomics are fundamental: workers who are less tired work better, are better motivated, do not suffer illnesses and pains associated with labour and a sensation of wellness and good humour is generated, which improves their disposition towards the company and provides everyone with a better lifestyle quality. As corporations, shops and even governments take notice of this fact, abandoning their old notion that consists in increasing their perceived productivity by pressing more their employees into harder and harder work without compensation, so will increase the demand for professionals trained in these areas.
