Their manufacturers define this vehicle as the World's first dynamically stabilized, self-balancing Human Transporter.
It is a strange, two wheeled cart capable of taking a person at about 35 km/h over many kinds of terrain. It can be controlled with the bodily movements of its rider, and is environmentally-friendly thanks to its electrical propulsion. Batteries are rechargeable.
Clearly, there has been a lot of research put into this product; it has good design, a nice and curious shape, and its manufacturers tried hard and well to avoid accidents and other problems that in our [somewhat cynical] society usually end in one tribunal or another.
The Segway could be nice for some unique outdoor adventures provided that there are enough batteries at hand, but we don't think that it could stand a really hard treatment; it is ok for suburbia, but don't count on it taking you thorough Uganda's roads. We shall see its evolution in this regard with new versions to come.
With a price tag around five thousand dollars, this vehicle is not precisely inexpensive; we would define it as an expensive dad toy with some potential for other uses, albeit it would first have to evolve a little bit in order to provide more clear advantages outside some market niches.
Clearly it has to overcome public skepticism, but also the real lack of a mission that it suffers at the present time.
Moreover: you should not forget how to use another kind of wheeled things called bicycles if you want to save money or lose weight, a matter of increasing importance in an increasingly obese society.
