The driest place on Earth is undoubtedly the Atacama desert, in northern Chile. But this area forms part of a vast highland known as the 'Puna,' extending over parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru; this region belonged to the Inca empire during the last decades of its existence, before the Europeans reached America.

You read well, America is the whole continent, strictly speaking, and not the United States. When the continent was named for Americo Vespucci, the U.S.A. was not even in the planning stage.

But returning to the Inca period and the Puna, what is remarkable there is that the characteristics of the region, its mineral sand the local weather combine to preserve anything organic in an extraordinary way.

Inca mummies are well-known, but in recent years, a number of mummies belonging to high-ranking children of Inca aristocracy were found at the top of Llullailaco volcano; these had been sacrificed to their God, the Sun or Inti.

Their bodies were perfectly preserved after more than five hundred years; their clothes had lost not a bit of colour, and it was possible even to extract blood and do some DNA fiddling, until their present-day relatives were actually found.

At Nazca, where you can see some spectacular figures carved in the landscape, it is actually possible to find ancient mummies littering the ground. Needless to say, if you ever come across one, you should not touch it; call the local authorities immediately because corpses from last year look almost the same as those from a thousand years ago.

The vast and bizarre Puna lets us make such discoveries thanks to its extreme weather conditions and landscape.
