Based on our experience as explorers, here at Andinia we believe that while it is desirable to have waterproof or rainproof clothing for all outdoor activities, this does not imply that you have to spend a lot of money purchasing those items.

Clothes made out of special, breathable fabrics that are also waterproof are excellent; we have tried them and usually go outdoors with this kind of gear. However, we find those pretty expensive and you may probably want to delay purchasing a whole set; the only things that we recommend you to buy as soon as possible are waterproof, breathable socks for your feet because they will make a real difference the next time you go under the rain or cold outside.

Regrettably, these socks may be hard to get in the market now, because manufacturers prefer to sell boots with similar treatments - probably because their profit margins are higher -, and these are not up to our standards. We thing that simple leather boots are the best kind of footwear if combined with such special socks.

An alternative would be to use those rubber boots used on rainy days, but they may not be very resistant. Nevertheless, in tropical areas guerrilla fighters can be seen all the time wearing those instead of military-issue footwear, so they work well at least under certain circumstances.

So, stick to waterproof socks if possible, and for the rest of your body, get yourself a rainproof poncho. If it is big enough, it will also cover your backpack and the gear you carry, and is far more cheaper than a full set of clothes, because these may be good, but are never cheap.
