But we Andinians have to add that particularly in what concerns to social dehumanisation and the authentic survival situations that such attitudes may cause along with the paradigmatic shifts of perspective that are taking place in our world, it is important to read, comment and debate these issues at all levels.

Cases such as the unfortunate and tragic destruction of New Orleans in 2005 not only prove that we are playing dangerously with our world's climate - for scientists there is no doubt that there is a connection between ill-planned industrial activity, global warming and the appearance of such destructive effects such as hurricane Katrina - but demonstrate how ill consumerism is as a social construction.

What happened in the aftermath of the flooding of New Orleans demonstrates what lies below the coat of luster that consumerism provides is very far removed from its ideals: 40% of people living below the poverty line is not just number corresponding to a third world country. Those numbers correspond to the population of the flooded city before the catastrophe that virtually destroy edit, and the flooding only made things worse.

But what should call our attention is the lack of solidarity and compassion by the government of the United States and the people of that country: the same government that responded as slow as a snail to that catastrophe affecting mainly poor people of African descent, was a government voted twice by the electorate of the country, and sported and still sports some people that have clearly and specifically manifested racist ideas: just remember secretary Ashcroft, who belonged to the Ku Klux Klan. Moreover: except the people of neighbouring cities and states, most citizens of the United States seem to not have done much for the people of the disgraced region, while the rest of the world watched in aw how the country that pretends to be the number one in everything reacted like the most-incompetent dinosaur. Even Cuba seems to have a much better preparedness for such disasters, and moreover: the same individuals that pretend to appear as compassionate but leave tens of thousands to their fate in a hurricane are those who pretend to spread democracy and liberty around the world.

Was this a natural disaster, purely by coincidence? Wrath of God? Is the USA finally a decaying empire? Is this the produce of ecological negligence? These are questions open to debate, and yet more readings.
