It is generally assumed that 'culture' is a word that has only positive connotations, but there is proof to the contrary. It is also culture what plunders, destroys nature and corrupts our environment; culture is neither good nor bad: it is oriented according to specific values, some of which may cause prejudice to some or some things and benefit others.

Consider for example, the Tower of London versus the nazi concentration camp of Bergen - Belsen. In both places, scores of people were mercilessly murdered: both are terrible places by any standard, but while the concentration camp is seen exactly as what it is, the Tower of London is in fact, a spectacle, a tourist attraction, and even tour guides jokingly describe the place using dark humour. p>Under pressure, in an emergency or survival situation, the human being may seek to destroy or kill for the only reason that we here at Andinia consider valid, which is to defend one's own life. In this sense, this act may not be considered an extension of culture because it does not constitute a gratuitous manifestation such as a hunter killing for pleasure, but as a necessary act, which is what a hunter does for self defence or in order to gather food.

Killing in order to eat, in order to save the many, or in order to get something to eat is in principle, acceptable, and so is hunting if it is oriented towards that. A hunt for fun is morally reprobable.

Could we conceivably consider human activities developed in order to survive as morally or ethically perfect? We can't say for sure, but we believe that there is a clear and unequivocal side to all this: civilisation and people carry quite a number of 'sins' that animals killing only for natural causes and ends do not.

Maybe we should not have left the trees...
