Garden Railways is a magazine dedicated to lovers of big-scale models used in outdoor layouts, in many cases capable of carrying people sitting over locomotives and cars! These large model railroads require special construction techniques and materials since unlike their most traditional indoor counterparts, tracks, rolling stock and other items must be able to survive over time in open environments.
The magazine gives truly interesting information about all these topics, different models, where to get them and how to construct a whole layout in your backyard, garden, park or patio.
This is perhaps the single most expensive form of model railroading, but also probably the most interesting.
Regarding models, these are manufactured generally in scales such as 1:32, 1:12 and 1:4.
Layouts combine usually not only model railroading techniques, but require gardening skills as well as masonry, and in a few cases, even true railway engineering knowledge.
But there is also an activity which can be called model railroading, since the idea - in part at least - is to reproduce the working of a real railroad section.
Railroads entered a slow decadence after WWII, but in recent years, enthusiasts and railway clubs have gathered to restore full sections of actual railroads that were closed.
They restored old locomotives, coaches, wagons and everything else, and run these rail sections as in real life, in a limited way.
The biggest problem for these projects is their associated costs, which is huge, because it implies the restoration of massive structures, complex machinery and indeed, there is a lot of administrative fuss around.
However, over time these reborn railroads almost invariably become very valuable assets for the local tourism industry, and there are many flourishing around the world.
Some examples include the Tierra del Fuego Railway, which was built and operated by inmates of the maximum security prison, in Ushuaia, the Festiniog Railway in Wales, and the Isle of Man Railway System.
