Regarding survival, camping and outdoor adventure activities, weight is a critical problem. You can't take in your backpack or survival kit more than you physically can, so it becomes immediately obvious that being limited in such a way makes it important to select your gear in such a fashion as to be able to get the most functionality possible from each component. A kilo or pound is not always equal in this regard.

Ponchos have a lot of different uses and offer great functionality: even without specific survival training, people can rapidly find almost fifty different uses for a poncho, so having one in your kit makes a lot of sense, for not only they are good, but also cheap, simple and usually very resistant; so we would never cease to recommend adventurers to purchase one.

However, given the fact that most good ponchos are manufactured for military purposes and sold on a surplus basis to the public, purchasers should acquire some coloured duct tape or paint, and apply those to one of the sides of the black or olive drab military-issue ponchos, in order to give them just another possible use as emergency signalling devices.

A number of brightly coloured ponchos have appeared in the market, but we have not seen so far such products reaching the quality standards of military ponchos; perhaps they will one day, but so far we still prefer the green variety. Of course, not all olive ponchos are really intended for military use, so you should ask before buying one.
