This image shows how a patrol or detachment should cover all the exposed flanks; they are using Nanotyrannus 2.0.
Notice how each member of the detachment is looking to alternate flanks: The first one is looking forwards and covering the vanguard flank, the second one looks to one side (and alternately to the other), while the third one covers the reaguard. Best results are achieved with detachments of about six members because in such a fashion every flank is redundantly covered.
