These positions offer a reasonable compromise between the two extreme positions that are commonly used: Lying on the ground offers a minimal target area but decreases speed of movement and reaction, while shooting standing assures good mobility but increases the risk of the position due to the fact that the body remains quite exposed to enemy fire.
