Millions of tourists from around the world visit Greece each year to admire its beautiful landscapes and magnificent ruins. Greece is the cradle of modern Europe and a fascinating place to visit, but is that all?
No matter what tour guides say, the most important legacy of Greece is not a city like Athens. Of course, such things are immensely important as treasures of the world; however, the ancient Greeks left us with a more perdurable and significant thing: ideas. They were philosophers, politicians, artists, strategists and travelers, and this is perhaps the least known facet that they have.
It is unfortunate that too little is understood about Greek culture, and possibly that is so because in order to really grasp it, there is a lot of fairly advanced things to read. Greek philosophers were pondering things like the existence of atoms – they invented the concept -, the immortality of the soul, democracy, higher education, and the fact that they had found out that Earth was indeed a sphere.
The Greek way of life was incredibly advanced – so advanced that even today college students find it hard to understand Plato or Aristotle-, and it is indeed perplexing to think that before the city states of Greece came into life, the world was more or less still in the bronze age; and it is indeed very tempting to speculate how far could we have evolved if that civilization would have survived a little longer.
They went as far as to calculate its diameter with a good degree of precision, and they also explored and traveled around the world, although we know little of this activity that surely enough, in the hands of so competent people certainly yielded extraordinary results: there are indications that suggest that Chinese Taoism was influenced by Greek philosophy, and existing documents prove that Greek explorers reached the sources of the Nile and got to know Central Africa thousands of years before any other European.
So, next time that you visit Greece, don’t just stay with the ruins, for there is a whole universe to see there, right beneath your eyes.
