Here's how it works "Patio 2.12", the solar house that won the second place in the 2012 European Solar DECATLHON held in Madrid. This house, designed and built by universities in Andalusia, is based on the use of a courtyard which water accumulates, and that works on the principle of natural cooling energy of the "botijos" or "búcaros" porous stoneware designed to conserve fresh water for drinking.

Canopea® is the solar house won the Solar Decathlon Europe, Madrid 2012, in which solar homes were assessed in terms of their sustainability, architecture, engineering and construction, energy efficiency and self-sufficiency, comfort, functioning, industrialization, innovation and market viability. See the video:
Team Rhône-Alpes proposes an urban scale project called Canopea® to answer current issues about density in the alpine corridor cities where land is scarce and expensive because of the geophysical context. In a limited urban space due to the presence of mountains and rivers, we need to find solutions to live in dense cities while being close to nature.
To do so, Team Rhône-Alpes came up with the nanotower concept. Nanotowers are small towers housing an individual house on each floor. The top floor hosts a common laundry, a summer kitchen and a relaxing place for all the community. A common staircase and elevator services a cluster of three nanotowers. Passageways link them together. Gardens boxes, storage boxes and a recycling system create a friendly environment. People can enjoy all spatial qualities of an individual house while living in a dense urban centre and sharing a sense of community.
Each house is organised around three boxes which contain a technical core (HVAC equipment, bathroom, kitchen) a master bedroom and a flexible room that can be used as a TV room, a library, an office or an extra bedroom. In between these boxes, open living space offers fluidity. The inside space can expand on the outside. Peripheral terrace make the living area larger. Glass
louvers facades provide protection against cold days winds and rains. They slide away to give way to solar screens during the hot ones. The building breathes according to seasons' climate.
