IAEA decision on Iran will be a lose-lose outcome, says Greenpeace.

Vienna, Friday, February 3, 2006- The International Atomic Energy Agency's inevitable decision to report Iran to the Security Council will seriously increase the risk of further escalating conflict in the region, Greenpeace said today.

"Reporting Iran to the UN Security Council will be a lose-lose outcome for the international community" said Greenpeace nuclear analyst William Peden. "Board members supporting the EU-3 draft resolution will be effectively shooting themselves in the foot.

"There will be no winners in this dispute. As Iran made quite clear today they will have no choice but to severely restrict inspections and no longer comply with requests to reveal information above and beyond what is legally required under existing treaty obligations. All diplomatic initiatives will also be dead in the water escalating further tensions on all sides. It is clear that heightened and mismanaged distrust on both sides will solve nothing.

"A decision to report Iran is premature - there were hopes that negotiations and other diplomatic efforts could still succeed and where there remains hope one should not close the door. Regrettably, the majority of the IAEA Board's intentions do just that,"
said Peden.

Greenpeace is opposed to any nation acquiring nuclear technology and nuclear weapons, including Iran. It believes that the current crisis is borne out of the clear contradiction in the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty that obliges signatories to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons whilst at the same time encouraging their access to nuclear technology that can be diverted to produce those weapons.

"The real solution to this crisis is a Nuclear Free Zone in the Middle East," said Peden. "It is a vital first step towards removing all nuclear proliferation risks in the region, as well as providing the essential security guarantees from nuclear weapons states outside the region. If we don't seriously contemplate this option then the world will, as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan pointed out yesterday, lurch from nuclear crisis to nuclear crisis," Peden concluded.

IAEA decision brings Iran crisis closer to the brink, says Greenpeace.

Vienna, Saturday, February 4, 2006- The International Atomic Energy Agency's decision to report Iran to the UN Security Council will seriously increase the risk of escalating tensions in the region, Greenpeace said today.

"Reporting Iran to the UN Security Council has created a vacuum of confidence building, a situation that IAEA head ElBaradei said he was intent on avoiding," said Greenpeace nuclear analyst William Peden, speaking from IAEA headquarters in Vienna. "Board members supporting the EU-3 draft resolution have effectively shot themselves in the foot. The Iran crisis has been brought closer to the brink."

"There will be no winners in this dispute. Iran has made it quite clear that they will now severely restrict inspections and no longer comply with requests to reveal information above and beyond what is legally required under existing treaty obligations. All diplomatic initiatives will also be dead in the water, escalating further tensions on all sides. It is clear that the heightened mistrust on both sides will make resolution of this crisis all the more difficult."

"The real solution to this crisis is a true and meaningful Nuclear Free Zone in the Middle East, not one which is paid lip service to," said Peden. "It is a vital first step towards removing all nuclear proliferation risks in the region, as well as providing the essential security guarantees from nuclear weapons states outside the region. If we don't seriously contemplate this option then the world will, as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan pointed out a few days ago, lurch from nuclear crisis to nuclear crisis," Peden concluded.

Fools. Playing with nuclear weapons is like gambling on russian roulette: the outcome will always be pretty serious.

While Iran may be strategically dangerous, there are aspects related to the whole atomic business and mass destruction weapons (WMDs) that are not being considered by politicians and policy makers.

There is a a post in our blog regarding nuclear safety standards and the need to revamp them considering the new menace that mass destruction terrorists mean now for our world that states how things are and what are the trends in this regard. You should read it in order to open you eyes to our real vulnerability.

Iran is a problem indeed, but the least one: in fact, you have a live, nuclear WMD sufficiently near your home to kill you if someone decides so.

Every single commercial nuclear reactor standing in the world today is a desirable target of apocalyptical terrorists, and while they can be defended, they can also be attacked by extreme means and weapons: rocket lauchers, missiles, artillery fire and even hijacked commercial airliners.

A sufficiently hard attack will eventually destroy the seals around the reactor, and an effect similar to that of Chernobyl will follow.

Consider this: a moder, 155 mm. artillery unit has a range of about 40 km and shells can even be directed by radar or laser aiming; such cannons can fire rapidly about ten rounds per minute and explosive shells of this calibre usually prudce craters of about 15 m. in radius, and a similar depth when they hit concrete. If terrorists get their hands on such a machine, in just five minutes they could hit any target with fifty of such rounds.

That's the equivalent of a sustained, heavy artillery barrage capable of causing major destruction. Plus, in just five minutes - as the attacks on New York and Washington demonstrate - will catch even the military totally off-guard. And then, many more minutes will pass until they can track down the source of those rounds, in a 40 km radius around the target.

How many impacts could any nuclear reactor take in twenty or thirty minutes? Wouldn't that be enough to destroy the protective core?

Of course, three or four planes could be hijacked and thrown over the target at almost the same time. That will certainly suffice to cause a radiation leakage too.

We can have cleaner energy sources in our world, but it is up to us to start using them. If we want electricity and in general terms, a lot of energy of any type without seeking efficiency or letting ourselves fall prey of the "rebound effect". This is a very simple to understand process: each progress in terms of efficiency is cancelled by an increase in the volume market. If cars get more efficient, then an increase in the number of them turns the effect of any efficiency advancement originally thought to decrease energy consumption or contamination null because at the same time the car market expands. So there is a lot of hype but few definitive actions designed to break this vicious circle because still few people dare to use things like these:
